Title a vehicle from another state
Apply for a California title and registration after you move here or buy a vehicle titled in another state.
What you need
- Out-of-state title
- VIN verification on a REG 31, unless exempt
- Smog inspection, unless exempt
- Your California address
What happens
- We open a nonresident original and estimate tax from the vehicle.
- You complete verification and smog before the application can finish.
- California plates and a registration card are issued when the DMV accepts it.
